About Our Coatings

Established in 1994 by John, Firefree Coatings is a well-known California-based company that provides innovative fire-resistant paints and coatings. With years of experience and specialization in the industry, our mission is to enhance safety and prevent the devastating effects of fire in homes, commercial & residential buildings, and industrial facilities.

Our products are also certified by various international organizations and are rigorously tested to ensure they meet or exceed industry standards, including ASTM E84/UL 723, ASTM E119, ASTM E662, ASTM D5590-00, and ASTM G21-96. Additionally, our products are non-toxic, have low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) content, and do not produce dangerous outgassing. We also offer a range of topcoat paints that can be applied over Ff88® and FfA to achieve the desired finish and color without compromising the fire retardant properties.

It is important to note that while Ff88® and FfA can significantly improve fire safety, they should be used as part of a comprehensive fire prevention plan that includes smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and emergency exits. We ship our fire resistant products worldwide. Our products, Firefree 88® ("Ff88®") and Firefree Class A ("FfA"), are designed to provide a high level of fire protection, often exceeding the performance of alternative fire retardant products. Ff88® is our premier product, providing both fire retardant and fire-resistant properties. It is a non-toxic, water-based, intumescent paint that can be applied to various materials, including gypsum board, plaster, lath, concrete, metal, tin, foam, foam composite panels, and wood. FfA is a Class A coating rated by ASTM E84 for flame spread & smoke development, and it can be used on many of the same surfaces as Ff88®.

Our Milestones

Firefree 88® first gained approval in 2004 when it was tested in accordance with FM 4975 and part 1 of FM 4880. This milestone marked a major achievement in the development and recognition of our fire-resistant technology. Ff88® and FfA are designed for easy application with standard paint equipment, making them accessible for professional. The typical coverage rate for Ff88® is 100 square feet per gallon for a 10 mil thin film thickness, and for FfA, it is 200 square feet per gallon for a 6 mil thin film thickness. Drying times vary depending on environmental conditions, with Ff88® generally drying to the touch in one hour and fully curing in seven days, while FfA dries to the touch in 30 minutes and fully curing in five days.
